Tools for Policy Action
We build innovative tools to guide our policy recommendations, provide easy access to actionable insights, and demonstrate that better approaches to environmental data are possible.
Tech Provider Guide
From lead pipe replacement to protecting biodiversity, innovative technology providers are eager to tackle major environmental issues. To partner with government, they need an efficient way to understand agency needs and technology policies. These resources support environmental technology providers as they navigate and collaborate with federal agencies.
How far will $15 billion take us in replacing lead pipes?
Congress provided $15 billion to replace toxic lead water pipes that pose serious health risks to millions of Americans. This map shows how far that money will go.
Lead and Copper Rule Compliance Timeline Calculator
The Lead and Copper Rule Improvements Deferred Timeline Calculator tool allows users to determine whether or not their water system is eligible for an extended timeline under the Lead and Copper Rule Improvements, and calculate annual replacement rates needed to reach varying timelines.
Texas Community Water System Prioritization Tool
This is an interactive, web-based application for policymakers, advocates, non-profits, and technical assistance providers to use to improve drinking water quality and access for Texans. Our goal is that this tool can be collectively used to understand the durability of—and prioritize future investments in—water systems.
Drinking Water Utility Boundary Updater
Knowing which drinking water system provides water to whom is critical for understanding if your water is safe to drink, and knowing who benefits from water infrastructure improvements. This tool allows water systems to easily develop and edit their drinking water service area boundaries.
Pay for Success + Streamlined Permitting Database
Compiling procurement & permitting innovations to uplift success stories, promote replication, and break down silos between agencies.
Permitting Tool Inventory
In collaboration with the Federation of American Scientists (FAS), we built this inventory to enhance our collective understanding of how software is used in the federal permitting process, and to open lines of dialogue for cross-agency and cross-sector learning.
Wetlands Impact Tracker
In the spring of 2024, EPIC and Atlas Public Policy developed the Wetlands Impact Tracker to assist watershed advocates in identifying proposed impacts to wetlands and waterways. Utilizing publicly available data, we developed an AI-assisted workflow to scrape, standardize, and reveal 404 permit notices stored as PDFs.
Archived Version: Climate and Economic Justice Screening Tool
This is Version 2 of the Climate and Economic Justice Screening Tool, released by the Council on Environmental Quality in December 2024. Although the tool remains unchanged, public access through the White House was discontinued on January 22, 2025. We re-created Version 2 and made it publicly accessible.
EJ Tool Inventory
The Environmental Justice (EJ) Tool Inventory helps funding applicants, advocates, policy makers, and developers navigate—and collaborate across—today’s growing ecosystem of EJ tools. We hope this tool acts as a starting point—not just for discovering and comparing EJ tools, but for building a culture of connection and collaboration linked to our shared EJ goals.
Archived Version: Environmental Justice Analysis Multisite
This is an initial reconstruction of Version 2.32 of EPA’s Environmental Justice Analysis Multisite (EJAM) tool. This tool allows users to leverage EJScreen across multiple sites for at-scale environmental justice analysis. Public access to the tool was discontinued on February 5, 2025, but we re-created it and made it publicly accessible.
Federal Environmental IT Investments Dashboard
This dashboard shows IT Investments at Federal Environmental Agencies Investments related to "mission-delivery" and exclude "mission-support" and "standard" IT investments, such as those for email or travel management.
Innovation Indicators
The Innovation Indicators are experimental metrics for tracking trends and interventions associated with technological innovation and adoption.
They illustrate the teams, processes, culture and organizational dynamics that enable agencies to develop, procure, and use innovative technology for environmental stewardship.
